Location: Crete

Crete is the island of
surprises and contrasts. High mountains and deep gorges, archaeological sites
alongside traditional villages where life continues in a relaxed and friendly
way, clear blue seas bordered by golden sandy beaches. Here, in the crossroad of
the three ancient Continents, Zeus, the king of Greek gods, was born. Crete, in
the minoan era, gave birth to the first civilization in the west-european sense
(anthropocentric, in contradistinction of the eastern theocratic civilizations)
and also, here, the Apostle Paul was shipwrecked off in what is today known as
Kali Limenes (="Good Ports").
The geographical position of Crete attracted the attention of many
conquerors, like Romans, Arabs, Crusaders, Venetians, Ottomans and Nazis, and
the epic defense of the island against the terrific Ottoman Empire for 25 years
as well as the the legendary defense during the second world war, May 1941
(known today as the "Battle of Crete") are admirable samples of the indomitable
Cretan soul!
Many famous artists and politicians like El-Greco, Venizelos (the father of
modern Greece), Kazantzakis (great philosopher and litterateur), Kornaros (the
Homer of Modern Greece) and Elytis (Nobel in Literature, 1979) were also born in
Crete.
